know your rights!

Police brutality is no joke.
If you witness or experience police brutality...

Always be a witness...for a friend, relative or stranger.

If police stop you...

  • Stay in control of your emotions and words. Do not cuss. Do not physically resist.
  • Keep your hands visible.
  • Remember, their weapons are guns, pepperspray and billly clubs. your strongest weapon is your mind: Remain silent... the less you say the better.
  • Ask, "Am I free to go?" If not, you are being detained. Ask, "Why are you detaining me?" The police must have specific reasons for a specific crime to detain you.
  • Show I.D. if detained. Police can hold you for up to three days to identify you.

If police try to search you...

  • NEVER CONSENT TO A SEARCH.
  • DO NOT resist physically but do state loud and clear (especially if witnesses are around): "I DO NOT CONSENT TO A SEARCH."
  • DO NOT give them permission to search you. If you open your bag you are consenting to a search. Police may "pat down" your clothing if they suspect concealed weapons or drugs.

If police stop you in your car...

  • Stay calm. Again, you do not have to answer any questions, and DO NOT consent to a search.
  • When police ask, show your driver's license, registration and proof of insurance.
  • If you're given a ticket, sign it. Fight it in court later.
  • If you're suspected of drunk driving and refuse a blood, urine, or breath test, your license can be suspended.
  • If police want to search, again, tell the officer, "I do not consent to a search." Do not open your trunk or car door. If you do, you've consented to both a search of both you and your property.

If police knock on your door and ask to enter your home...

  • NEVER CONSENT TO A SEARCH
  • Step outside and lock the door behind you.
  • Ask to see the warrant. Check for the proper address, judge's signature, and what the warrant says they're searching for.

If you are arrested...

  • Do not answer any questions until a lawyer arrives to represent you. Only say, "I have the right to remain silent and I want to talk to my attorney."
  • You may be handcuffed, searched, photographed and fingerprinted.
  • Do not talk about your case to inmates in jail or anyone other than your attorney.

Key Points:

  • Always carry proper I.D.
  • Don't talk to police. If arrested, say, " I have the right to remain silent and I want to talk to my attorney."
  • Never consent to a search of your person, vehicle, home or property. If the police search you, state loudly, "I DO NOT CONSENT TO A SEARCH!
  • Document and report police misconduct.
