The SouthWest Organizing Project is helping people to have their property values assessed FAIRLY.
Call SWOP at 247.8832 (or email) for more information.
Of note: On the Bernalillo County Website, there is an Applicaition for Low Income and Over 65 Valuation Limitation.
Q: Why did property values skyrocket in recent years?
A: According to the County Assesor's office, valuations had not been done properly for many years and property values were being undervalued.
Q: How are property values determined?
A: There are a number of factors such as recent developments in your neighborhood, but most importantly, your property value is determined on the sale of price of homes in your area.
Q: Could the Assessor's office make a mistake when assessing my property?
A: Yes. The Assessor's office doesn't have enough people to personally check every single house. They use a computer program. It is important to protest your valuation if you think it is wrong.
Q: Is it worth the time and energy to protest my valuation?
A: Yes. The protest process is fairly simple. In 1999 70 percent of those who protested won their protest and had their property tax lowered. During 2000, due to community effort, more people protested their assessments than ever before.
Q: How long do I have to protest?
A: You have about 30 days to protest from the time you get your 'Notice of Valuation'.
