Economic Justice:
Democracy and the need for Participatory Budgeting

"Our members are community residents just like yourself who have organized and taken action to improve our neighborhoods."

In January and early February of 2002, three SWOP members participated in a grassroots delegation to Porto Alegre, Brazil to attend the World Social Forum.

One of the highlights of the WSF was learning about the process of Participatory Budgeting, implemented in the host city over the past several years. Residents of Porto Alegre develop their own infrastructure priorities, and a process of plenaries and workshops result in a city budget built from grassroots, broad-based participation. This practice is discussed internationally as an important model of economic democracy.
