working to empower our communities to realize racial and gender
equality and social and economic justice. |
The list of chemicals below comes from a list Intel submitted to the New Mexico Environment
Department's (NMED) Air Quality Bureau (AQB). Intel has asked to have approval ahead of time
to release any or all of these chemicals into the air as long as no individual chemical release
adds up to more than five tons per year. The information about the amount of each chemical released
into the air comes from Intel. We do not know how these amounts were calculated or measured.
Companies are routinely required to only disclose those chemicals which are required by federal or
state legislation. This does not mean that other hazardous chemicals are not being emitted from
their stacks (stack emissions) or by other means of escaping into the air (fugitive emissions).
The data on the health effects come from our friends at
Scorecard who provide a number of valuable environmental databases on-line. Though there
are health effects data for individual chemicals, it should be noted, that there is relatively
little research on the effects of multiple exposures. In the same way that when one combines
yellow and blue to make green, mixing these chemicals also produce new chemicals that have not
been tested for health and reproductive hazards.
After examining the list of chemicals below, please visit our
air pollution modeling page. On this page, you will be able to input different variables to
see how pollution transport is predicted by the experts. We think that the most interesting
part of the model, however, is the number of assumptions that go into the equations. Looking
at the unknowns embedded in the chemical data, the lack of understanding of synergy between chemicals,
and the unknowns with respect to the cumulative effects of all the different chemical compounds,
we can only conclude that air monitors located in the neighborhoods that lie directly in the
pollutants plume line should be mandatory. Because of the high levels of uncertainty and
assumptions inherent to air modeling, SWOP along with its air pollution
experts, are offering a proposal for neighborhood monitoring stations. Click
here to see this proposal. Instead of telling neighborhoods
"this is what may be coming your way", with monitors, the uncertainty--the guessing--
will be removed.
Intel, what are we breathing?
