According to sources, Cipriana Jurado Herrera from CD Juarez, Chihuahua was arrested this morning, April 4, 2008, by the PGR (Federal Police) reportedly for ‘Obstruction of Communication’ for blocking the International Bridge in 2005.

Cipriana Jurado Herrera is a long time movement organizer with CISO (Centro de Investigacion y Solidaridad Obrera) which she founded in about 1990. Cipriana has been active in organizing maquiladora (assembly plant) plant workers, women, and lately has been at the front of the struggle for justice and human rights for the more than 450 young women assassinated in CD Juarez, and the state of Chihuahua.

This arrest comes at the heels of the assassination of a farm worker three weeks ago and other arrests of visible political activists.

Social movements across the Americas are showing signs of pointing to Mexican President Calderon and the Governor of the state of Chihuahua as responsible for a crackdown on political expression.

According to local organizers, “this is a wave of repression we are seeing in Chihuahua against social and civic movement leaders."

Organizers are calling on their allies in the US to organize protests in front of Mexican Consulates, and are mobilizing comments and letters of protest to Mexican President Felipe Calderon and Chihuahua Governor Jose Reyes Baeza Terrazas.
