NO to GUNS in SCHOOLS

Guns in schools... The thought of anyone carrying a gun around me makes me feel uneasy! Even if it's a trained officer. A gun's purpose is to harm and kill! They'll only escalate the situation. Think about it... If someone was really in a situation where a gun was necessary (in my opinion they're never necessary) to stop them, they'll only feel threatened and want to retaliate in some way. Using peaceful means to solve a situation is important to me! Like more violence prevention and intervention programs, it wouldn't hurt anyone right? Violence + Violence only equals more violence!!! Plus think of Ryan Vigil... One of the founders of a non-violence student group, that made pledges for everyone to sign, which state that the person who signs it won't bring guns to school, won't ever use a gun to solve a problem, and will try and use their influence on their friends so that they won't ever use guns. The main point GUNS DON'T SOLVE PROBLEMS!! Ryan is proof of that. What kind of example is APS setting arming officers? That's just showing us that guns are good use of protection. That it's good to carry around a gun so that others will Fear You! Basically that guns are GOOD! They're NOT! Like i said before they are meant to HARM and KILL people!! Why would you want to carry something around that would harm and kill people?! Someone give me one good reason and maybe I'll change my mind.... But I HIGHLY DOUBT it!

Comments:
Well, I disagree with what you said for the following reasons.
The police will be trained to use this gun. This is for defence of the defenceless. I would like to see you stop an attack by someone with a gun. Go ahead and try and reason with em, good luck. If a teacher would have been armed at columbine, they could have saved alot of lives. You cant let a fear of guns control you. I have children in a school system, and I would support any trained person to use it to protect my child and to protect any child. I own several guns and would gladly use one to stop any violence, such as rape or murder. Have you ever been stranded in the middle of nowwhere and a couple of rednecks try and rape you? They would not rape me, I can garuntee it. What about my wife, you say. She is a crack shot, they would not rape her either. PLEASE dont be brainwashed, by gun control people.

What do you say to the woman who was being stabbed to death in the Walmart by the Ex? A passer by, with a permitted weapon, stopped the murder by using his gun to kill the man. I take it, you would have asked him to stop stabbing his ex?

Cheers,mi3ke

Wednesday the APS School Board is going to vote to arm security guards. The issues keeps changing first it was arm guards but people were uneasy about security guards having guns. Then it changed to creating a police force which the AG still has not ruled on. I am sure it is going to have to go to the legislature were it will fail. Now it is back to arming the security guards don't you all see all of this is just a sly way to get guns in our schools. It is not about safety it never was it is only about gettin security guards thier guns so the community has a false sense of safety. If it was really about safety the focus of this discussion would be prevention and intervention. Thank you for reminding us what high school student think about this Aurea and how armed guards aren't going to create safety.

Your opinions are very appreciated and I respect how you feel. See my whole view on deadly weapons is negative. I don't see their purpose. I understand that it's a way to defend youself, but the thing is shooting someone who is trying to shoot you isn't stopping violence. The violence is still there. You yourself are creating more violence in the situation. I know you can't stop a bullet with only your bare hands, but a bullet can't stop a bullet either. If anything a non-lethal weapon would be more reasonable because although your still hurting someone at least they'll live. I've been in a couple situations where a gun was pointed directly at me. Lucky for me they didn't have the guts to really shoot me, but imagine if I had a gun and I shot first because a gun was in my face, they would be dead and I would be no better than them. Most likely I'd be dead too, because their friends would come after me. There's no gain there, only loss.

Oh and by the way the security guards had guns both at Columbine and Virginia Tech they did not stop the violence and since then Columbine has decided to disarm their guards. Again if we focus more on our students and the resource they lack then work to provide them along with more support, skills and attention to mental and emotional health we might have a safer healthier school environment

Violence will always be here in the world. Until Jesus comes back. We are a violent people, so you cannot be passive and let armed people do as they wish. I will never be passive to protect myself and family. God gives you tools and the brains to use them. I think you are very pasionate on the subject of non-violence. Most people in the world are fat, dumb, and happy. They dont care about anything. So I comend you on making people think.
If you take a course on human behavior or pyscology, you will see what makes people violent. Most of it has to do with the way you are brought up by your parents. A child brought up without love and no affection, always being yelled at, those are the children that will be violent. Maybe you should focus your talents on finding a solution in breaking the cycle of violence, instead of wanting to get rid of guns.

AMEN George!!!
I will continue to arm myself and agree to arm APS POLICE (Monica- they are not security guards)until there is a definite change in the violent society within Alb.
They're right when they say violence promotes violence ..... so tell me who started this violence within APS? It wasn't the cops.
It's obvious to me that there is a NEED for armed police in schools these days. There wasn't a need when I was in school, because a fight was with fists. Nowadays, no one even knows how to fight fair - they use weapons with an attempt to kill.
Do something to stop kids from bringing weapons on campus and killing each other - then we can talk about disarming campus police.

It sounds like there is agreement in the need to break the cycle of violence. Parenting is definitely a major point. Like George pointed out, children raised in fear and violence will continue in that cycle. Creating environments where violence is not used as a means to resolve conflict will be a large first step. Young people need to see more adults able to deal with problems without force.

Let's talk about all of the ways to stop violence in our society - mainly through us adults who model force, violence, coercion with our children, and others around us.

Have you all heard of Rachels Challenge? Its a very goodprogram for our schools. Look it up on the net, and ask your board members to bring it into your schools.

I don't know where anyone from SWOP advocated "getting rid of all guns." The argument that armed guards in APS will make the school safer could also be applied to hall monitors, educational assistants, substitute teachers, teachers, principals, students, and custodians. Guns don't make people safe. And, no, george, we aren't trying to take away your gun, just to stop you from bringing it to school.

The issue of security has more to do with healthy communities and resources for students than it has to do with weapons.

Geez, this is beyond stupid; another candidate for a Darwin award.

Monica mentions Columbine.I have a friend who was across the street waiting for friends when it happened. Two Police officers Pinned down the heavily armed Terrorists for several minutes. the officers were forced to retreat when they ran out of ammunition and the terrorists started throwing pipe bombs at the officers. Without those two armed officers the Columbine terrorist would have had even more time to kill innocents.

I have a bit of a problem with your reasoning.
A gun's purpose is to harm and kill! They'll only escalate the situation.
Actually, guns used properly are used to de-escalate situations. A gun's purpose is to protect you. It is merely a tool. One of many tools that you can use to protect yourself and those you love.

Using peaceful means to solve a situation is important to me!
Using peaceful means is very important to me also. However, in any situation, I am going to survive. From what you have written, it is more important to you to not use any sort of violence in any way. I feel sorry for your family and any others that depend on you. You have shown that you do not love them enough to save their lives or protect them if push comes to shove. I very much hope that your children never have to depend on you to save them.
Why would you want to carry something around that would harm and kill people?!
I carry on a daily basis. In fact, I am almost never without the means to protect myself, my family, and others. It is your choice to not protect your loved ones, but it is not your choice to force you decision upon me. If you carry your argument out even further, cars are used more often to kill and maim in this country than guns are. Are you still driving? Why would you want to use something like that that causes 50,000 deaths and many more injuries each year.

Please look at the number of times that guns are used each year to stop crimes. Many (most) times without having to be fired. Remember, when seconds count, the police are just minutes away.
Compare a few situations:
V-Tech: Gun free zone, no one but the bad guy armed. Final tally, over 30 dead.
Apalachian Law School: Two armed students confront a shooter and hold him for police.
Which situation would you rather be in?
Columbine: Two shooters go on rampage in a gun free zone.
School in Missouri: Armed Principal confronts shooter. Holds him for police.
I can think of another where the shooter was confronted by armed faculty. He left and went to another school where they were defenseless. By your reasoning, you and your kids would be at the second school. Your family has my pity, you only have my contempt. Sorry for that, but you must live in a world where reality is not always pretty. I have been a police officer for almost 20 years. I have seen the messes that violence can make. I have also seen the times where someone was able to stop the bad guy(s) before they were able to make the mess.

Good luck in your life. I feel you are going to need the luck since you refuse to face reality. . .

They say violence begets violence - I certainly hope so, and that the person who initiated the violence gets a whole lot more in return than he's comfortable with. As for people who won't fight back - they must have very LOW self-esteem, since they value a mugger, rapist, or murder's well-being more than their own. (One wonders if they also place a similarly low value on family members.)

Obviously the blogger has some de-rooted psychological issues.

I suggest the following link to clarify.

http://www.vcdl.org/new/raging.htm

In all cases, having a gun and defending yourself does more good to society than allowing the predators to act unchecked.

Also, I suggest that the blogger read "Armed: New Persepctives in Gun Control" by Gary Kleck and Don B. Kates, both are liberals yet appraoched gun control scientifically.

I am glad such a lively conversation is still going on around this issue. I the only thing I can add is to again highlight how New Mexico Schools are still failing our students. A recent study revealed NM students must struggle to succeed with NM ranking 46th for student success. Also our 8th graders ranked dead last in reading. So while many are still so concerned about insuring officers can carry a gun our school are still failing our students!! What happens when the School Boards job is to also manage a police force? Our schools are FAILING the last thing we need is to take more of the focus off education ons on to the management of a police force. By the way the AG ruled it down they will have to go to the legislature again taking away from the business of education. Our schools would be a safer place if we just focused on the student and their need and not getting cops guns.
