What strikes me most about this story is that it was held for 24 hours, presumably to ensure the guy was going to live and the news could report he wasn't seriously injured.
But what that really means is that if he had died, the story likely never would've been released. Imagine, a coverup that the vice president had shot and killed someone!

From what I can tell, a Corpus Cristi paper reported it before the Veep's office. On their website. I'd sure like to talk to who ever made the decision to run the story.
Yet more questions around corporate media's credibility.
It is totally hilarious, though. I got the news from a scrolling big brother report: "Vice President Cheney Accidentally Shoots Friend..."
Just wish his friend would've shot him!
Best rumor I started was that the Onion had to stop the presses when their feature story turned into breaking news.
And I can't wait to see the Daily Show's take on this one...
