Slicked up Racists - Minute Man Project

Minutemen Coming to New Mexico

LAS CRUCES— The Minuteman Project is coming to New Mexico, with a plan to man the state's southern border with volunteers for a month this fall.

But members of New Mexico's congressional delegation— along with the mayor of New Mexico's busiest border-crossing town— said they don't think civilian volunteers are the answer to illegal border crossings.

Farmington resident Mike Gaddy, a 58-year-old Army veteran, said Thursday he is the head of New Mexico's chapter of the Minuteman Project, the controversial Arizona-based volunteer group that positioned its members along the Mexican border in April to turn away border jumpers. More:

Richardson Agrees: Minutemen Bad for New Mexico

After pressure put on Governor Bill Richardson from the 'Rally for Border Justice' held in Santa Fe, New Mexico on April 25, 2005, Governor Richardson agreed to meet with organizers of the event that included the Southwest Network for Environmental and Economic Justice, Kalpulli Izkalli, SouthWest Organizing Project, Somos Un Pueblo Unido, Enlace Comunitario, Cambio, SAGE Council, and Concerned Citizens of Wagon Mound and Mora County on Thursday, June 2nd, 2005.

Various representatives of the sponsoring organizations attended the meeting with Gov. Richardson. He agreed to the following three recommendations:
  • Declare New Mexico an Immigrant friendly state, and support immigrant friendly legislation
  • State publicly that city, county and state goverments in New Mexico will prosecute illegal vigilantes, like the minuteman project, to the fullest extent of the law, and follow through with these statements
  • Write a letter to your fellow Border Governor Janet Napolitano of Arizona, along with all border governors, demanding that they hold accountable the public officials that refuse to enforce state and federal laws and protect the human and civil rights of all individuals in our border communities

Comments:
Here's a scenario: I'm walking my dog on one warm spring evening in Albuquerque. I see someone trying to break into my neighbor's house. I have no idea what he's up to -- he might be a friend without a key trying to fetch the homeowner's heart medication. He might be the housesitter who accidentally locked himself out. He might have the best of intentions. Or he could be trying to rob the place. I don't know, but I consider it my civic (not to mention neighborly) duty to contact the police.
Now, how exactly does that phone call to the authorities make me a "vigilante"?
The Minutemen are not down on our border rounding people up. They're not physically detaining anyone, they're not harming anyone, they are simply keeping their eyes open and calling the authorities when they see something amiss. What is wrong with that? This is peaceful activism in action.

jessie,

Ultimatly, the Minute Man Project's racist leadership and past will catch up with them.

Here in NM during the 60's and 70's, a group calling themselves the Minutmen used to send out death threats to folks that went something like this:

'You won't know who it is. It could be the Sheriff, it could be the Postman, it could be neighbor, etc...'

Then a simple crosshair would get their point across.

I've seen the slicked up version of MM propaganda and been to their message boards and websites, and the hatred spewed from them and their base followers (the Aryan Nation, KKK, etc.) is truly frightening.

Unfortunatly, many well intentioned folks, mainly concerned about jobs and their families, are falling victim to MMP deception.

We can't blame the victims of disastrous trade policies written by and for corporate interests, nor can we blame the victims of economic decisions made by and for the elite.

For real, until we understand that as middle and working class people in the US we have similar values, needs and interests as middle and working class people in Mexico, we're all doomed to fighting over peanuts.

And beyond that, targeting immigrants really is a case of misplaced priorities.

While the MMP and others were harrassing folks looking for a better life, Luis Posada Carriles, a convicted international terrorist, was walking around freely up until recently. (He says he entered through the US/Mexcio border in Matamoros/Brownsville.) It was only when he didn't stop doing press conferences and interviews that Homeland Security arrested him.

I wonder why MMP hasn't uttered his name.

He's now being held on, you guessed it, an immigration charge.

Silly.

In the end, the only way to protect ourselves - in many cases from terrorists trained and funded by the US Governent - is to allow for safe, legal and convenient crossing for folks who really only want to be able to raise a family with a little bit of dignity.

Instead of cleaning up their own corrupt government and developing their country to its potential, Mexicans break into it's neighbors land. Trespassing is illegal in Mexico, why cant it be illegal here as well?

anon, you are truly a cynical liar. the "minuteman" group you're tying with the mmp had nothing to do with the border and you know it.
