Definition of the week: Solidarity

Solidarity: Not to be confused with charity, solidary is different groups of people coming together around common interests, common values and common goals. In the international context, this means that the movement here in the US for racial and gender equality and social and economic justice is inextricably linked with global movements for self-determination, control of natural resources and dignity.

Repost of corrected post which I deleted - Sorry

If you don't know your past, you don’t know your future. The powers that be focus very closely on single issues and as a result, their victories continue to amass.

There is no doubt that there is strength in numbers but, in this fast moving, 'I’m gonna get mine' world, we tend to forget other people's plight because we did not share it. We forget until we realize what we lost came because we were too busy concerning ourselves with our own run in the rat race.

Perhaps it is a good time to stop and reflect upon the prophetic reminiscences of the Protestant minister and social activist, Martin Niemoller who wrote,

First the Nazis came…
First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out—
because I was not a communist;
Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—
because I was not a socialist;
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—
because I was not a trade unionist;
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
because I was not a Jew;
Then they came for me—
and there was no one left to speak out for me.

The hand writing is on the wall people. If you don’t stand up, speak up and speak out, you may very well lose that right forever.
